  3. WHAT DOES IT DO?
  4. Screen Play randomly selects a startup screen from a folder called “Screens” in your System Folder and makes it the next startup screen.  This allows you to use several startup screens without going through the time-consuming process of dragging and renaming files.

  6. HOW DO I USE IT?
  7. •    Create a folder called “Screens” in your System Folder and put all your startup screens into it. You can name them anything you want, but they must all be startup screens, not MacPaint documents.
  8. WARNING: Any file currently named “StartupScreen” will be deleted, so make sure to rename it and put it in the “Screens” folder.  
  9. •    Put Screen Play in your System Folder and restart.

  11. SCREEN PLAY FEATURES
  12. •    Screen Play works with both color (PICT0) and black-and-white startup screens.
  13. •    Screen Play does not alter the original screens in any way.  It deletes the existing startup screen, copies a file into the System Folder, and renames this file as StartupScreen.
  14. •    Since Screen Play runs after the startup screen is displayed, it is always "one behind", creating a screen for the next time you startup.
  15. •    There may be times when you want to know the name of the screen you just saw displayed, so that you can give it to a friend, fix it, or trash it.  If you select the startup screen and choose “Get Info” from the Finder, you’ll see something similar to this:

  33. Beneath the name “Startup Screen”, you’ll see the name of the file that this screen was copied from.  This screen, when displayed, will be the file called “Nagel”.

  35. Further down, where the file version is normally displayed, you’ll see the name of the screen that was last shown.  In this case, the last startup screen was the “Bloom County” screen.
  36. •    Screen Play should have no problems encountering folders or non-screen files in the “Screens” folder.

  40. The strings that Screen Play uses are stored in one STR# resource, so, if you wish, you can change most of them.  For example, you can tell Screen Play to look for a folder called “StartupScreens” instead of “Screens”.  With the right hacking, in fact, you can modify Screen Play so that it works with startup sounds instead of screens.
